If you plan to use a soundcard
interface for digital modes, you have a lot more to learn and do, but it CAN
be done!
For Soundcard Packet Information Start Here
This is definitely the place to start if you want to try to use a soundcard
instead of a TNC with Winlink and Airmail. All of the pages from this
site are in
one large .pdf file
HERE, downloaded from
Ralph Milnes (KC2RLM)
website.
You might want to check out the
SignaLink USB device instead
of using your internal PC soundcard. These are sold by Tigertronics,
Inc. for about $100 and work as a second soundcard on you computer. As
such, they can be interfaced to work packet, like a normal soundcard, or used
to transmit files like the ARRL news over the air. To see how to
configure the SignaLink USB to work with Winlink/Airmail, click
HERE.
An item that you might want to check is the deviation of
your TNC.
Deviation is the term used to
describe modulation of an FM signal. The audio fed into the microphone input
causes the transmitter's frequency to shift up and down from the center
carrier frequency; the louder the input, the greater the shift.
That instantaneous frequency shift is the
transmitter's deviation. Deviation is usually measured as the peak positive or
negative shift from the carrier (in other words, it's "center to peak", not
"peak to peak"). Click
HERE for more information.
